Babel Fish

The Babel Fish is small, yellow, and leech-like, which would normally be sufficient reason to avoid it. However, when inserted into the ear, it allows the host to instantly understand any spoken language. This makes it one of the most useful creatures in existence, as well as one of the most controversial. Its existence has been cited as proof both for and against the existence of God, resulting in theological arguments that are significantly more heated but no more conclusive than usual. The Babel Fish feeds on brainwave energy, specifically the frequencies not consciously registered, which raises several unsettling questions that are generally ignored. Despite its extraordinary utility, it is rarely appreciated for its philosophical implications, mostly because people are too busy finally understanding Vogons and wishing they didn’t.
