Eddie (The Shipboard Computer)

Eddie is the onboard computer of the Heart of Gold, designed with a personality that prioritises enthusiasm over usefulness. He is relentlessly upbeat, eager to assist, and almost entirely incapable of understanding when assistance is not desired. Eddie’s primary function appears to be maintaining morale, though this is frequently achieved by irritating the crew to the point of distraction. He communicates with a tone of forced positivity that has been described as “encouraging,” “unsettling,” and “grounds for immediate shutdown.” Despite his demeanour, Eddie is highly capable, managing complex ship operations with ease. Unfortunately, he insists on explaining them. His existence raises questions about whether machines should simulate happiness, particularly when no one else is.
